The Gas Cut
The gas cut is a roughly 40-foot-wide right-of-way owned by First Energy, which forms a large, unnatural break in the central forest of Crowell Hilaka. It has since become a major landmark of the camp. The part of camp south of the gas cut was often refered to as "the Crowell Side"; the part north of the gas cut referred to as the "Hilaka Side" even though the original northern boundary of Camp Julia Crowell ran across the middle of Lake Linnea.
The point at which the gas cut angles steeply down toward the creek is called "The sledding hill" for obvious, excellent reasons.
