Camp Margaret Bates Memorial

Camp Margaret Bates was in Macedonia on Valley View Road.  It was operated by Girl Scouts of Lake Erie Council from the mid -1950's to 1995.  In the late winter of '95, there was a fire in a chemical factory immediately upstream of the the camp.  Millions of gallons of water were poured onto the fire to douse it.  The water poured through the factory, picking up random, toxic chemical products, and then ran downstream into camp and soaked into the groundwater.  The camp was permanently closed because the chemical taint could never be completely removed.  The land was sold to a developer who then erected many nice houses on it.

A very cautionary tale.
