Friends of Camp Crowell/Hilaka

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Friends of Crowell Hilaka Group is to ensure that Camp Crowell Hilaka remain a safe, vibrant, accessible place for Girl Scout programming.

We believe program elements on this land of ours should be expanded to include leadership opportunities, the arts, sciences, engineering, sports, cultural events, and life skills, while retaining the traditional goals of individual girl growth and exploration in a natural setting.

We believe that the beautiful, historic structures in the camp are part of our shared heritage. They have an important role in inciting the imagination and promoting the dignity of the girls who use them. These structures should be preserved to be fully functional.

We believe that now, more than ever, all children need a place to learn what nature is, to learn to become good stewards of the land, to find and value quiet refection, to make friends face to face. Now, more than ever, we need to cherish these places.

This group dedicates itself to:

• Helping to raise money needed to keep the camp in good repair
• Doing the work ourselves when possible, and facilitating opportunities for service with adequate supervision to achieve quality results.
• Study of the issues involving the camp
• Promotion of Girl Scout programming using the environment itself as a resource.

What we ask from the administrative office of GSNEO:

• Commit to keeping Camp Crowell Hilaka open
• Promote troop camping and outdoor events on the council website. Expand descriptions of all council-owned sites.
• Facilitate and centralize the camp information and registration.
• Restructure the registration process so that girls and leaders who are planning a campout can check site availability online or by phone.
• Work with the council membership to develop solutions to problems
