The Nature Hut

The Nature Hut is a small mystery. It perches off the trail above the Kirby House garage, clinging to the steep side of the hill. It is a tiny little house. with a tiny little front porch, pitched roof, windows, and a single door. Girls hiking along the trail are intrigued, and stick their heads inside, view the tiny, empty interior, and continue on their way.
I have been unable to discover its original name or purpose. A small troop could perhaps squeeze inside to listen to a story, but not the typically large troops of yesteryear. Maybe a patrol could have held a meeting there.
In the 1970's, my mom-in-law volunteered at resident camp. One day she was assigned to stay at the Nature Hut. Groups of girls came along in rotation to learn about nature. In between groups, she sifted through a stack of old camp newsletters that someone else left there. She unexpectedly came across a poem written by her oldest daughter. It made her very happy.
