This year, due to the pandemic, FoCH had decided to move its annual Winter Wonders event from Gund Hall to the southwest portion of the park. A surge in COVID-19 cases forced us to cancel the  December 5 event, but we were still able to provide some unbridled joy and holiday spirit at Ohio's Hidden Treasure ™ Richfield Heritage Preserve by bringing in and decorating a number of evergreen trees – all of which were generously donated by Chuck and Kathy Rankin, whose support of FoCH throughout the years is appreciated beyond words. In front of each tree is a charming handwritten chalkboard sign acknowledging its sponsor. The impressive tree by Kirby’s Mill was sponsored and decorated by FoCH.  It’s festively trimmed with hand tied buffalo plaid garland, snowflakes, pinecones as well as red and white ornaments.

The other trees,  which have been cleverly decorated by local businesses as well as partners and friends of RHP, are located along the routes for FoCH’s unique self-guided “Trails & Trivia” hikes—which are offered now until December 31—over approximately six miles of scenic nature trails at RHP.  During these hikes, participants will learn more about the park’s fascinating history through an intriguing list of trivia questions—the answers to which can be discovered as they travel the trails. There are 5 separate loops and a bonus loop which can be completed in a single day or over multiple days. Selfies can be taken along the way and shared on Facebook with #TrailsAndTrivia. All participants need to adhere to park rules and hours as well as follow all pandemic safety protocols.  Leashed dogs are welcome to accompany hikers. Maps, along with the trivia questions, may be accessed online at www.friendsofcrowellhilaka.org/2020winterwonders  and on the FoCH Facebook page.

Hikers who successfully complete all trails will be recognized with a special participation gift.  In addition, there will be a drawing for some great prizes.
